TRUE VALUE

HE WAS A MAN
WHO WORE AN APRON
HE WAS A MAN
WHO KNEW WHAT HE HAD IN THE BACK
HE WAS A MAN
WHO'D ORDER THINGS SPECIAL
AND THE NAME OF THE LESSON HE TAUGHT
WAS THE SAME
AS THE NAME OF THE PLACE WHERE HE WORKED
TRUE VALUE

(speaking)

I was six years old when I tagged along
With my dad to the hardware store.
Like most little kids I liked candy,
But I loved hardware a whole lot more
There were bins of screw and elbow joints just
As far as the eye could see
I played and explored while my dad bought a wrench
Then he left and forgot about me
Like most little kids when abandoned
I cried and I peed in my jeans
Then the store got real still, and I looked up
at the biggest man I'd ever seen
He was huge, 'course all grown-ups look huge
to small kids, but this guy was especially scary
He bent down, I read the tag on his shirt,
it said "Hello, my name is Larry"

(singing)

HE WAS A MAN
WHO WORE AN APRON
HE WAS A MAN
WHO KNEW WHAT HE HAD IN THE BACK
HE WAS A MAN
WHO'D ORDER THINGS SPECIAL
AND THE NAME OF THE LESSON HE TAUGHT
WAS THE SAME
AS THE NAME OF THE PLACE WHERE HE WORKED
TRUE VALUE

(speaking)

I spent forty minutes with Larry that day
And he taught me all that he knew
He said, "Greg, ev'ry man as he goes through life,
has a toolbox. Hey, how 'bout you?
A wise man keeps plenty of love in his box
and a good pair of needle-nosed pliers
A foolish man uses a bread knife to strip
insulation off thin household wires."
The big man was speaking of drill bits and death
when my father came back to the shop
He said, "Let's go home," but before we could leave,
Larry held up his hand and said, "Stop!
If ever you're feeling confused
one simple truth will help clear the fog
Nothing is real you can't hold in your hand
or find in a catalogue."

(singing)

HE WAS A MAN
WHO WORKED ON SUNDAYS
HE WAS A MAN
WHO'D NEVER HAVE SEX
IN THE STORE
HE WAS A MAN
WHO DID HIS OWN TAXES
AND I'M CERTAIN THAT LARRY IS OUT THERE NOW
TEACHING SOME LITTLE BOY ALL ABOUT
TRUE VALUE
